Atlanta used cars

Since 1989, when Jay Leonard opened the first Preferred Automotive Group used car dealership on Speedway Drive in Fort Wayne, he has developed several ideas that have become trademarks for his business. The first idea was the Preferred Auto motto: “Home of the 100,000-Mile Warranty.” “If we repair a car before it sells, its an investment. If we repair a car after it sells, its an expense. On average, we invest $800-$900 into each of our vehicles before we put them on the lot for sale.”
Climb Everest, become a lion tamer, or buy a car. Statistically, whats the most dangerous thing that you could possibly do? You wont be surprised to hear it is probably buying a used car. Just think of what could go wrong - it could fall apart, or break down, or maybe just not be an appropriate vehicle. Whatever happens, it will cost a fortune to sort out. That is why used-car warranties were invented. “You only get what you pay for,” says Mark Barton, RAC marketing executive, who is adamant that a cheap warranty means spartan protection if something goes wrong. “Consumers have to read the small print and negotiate longer- term cover. Some dealers fob customers off with three months, but you should negotiate for 12 months or more. Of course, anything backed by the RAC is a first-class warranty.” Hes right of course - if you dont read about the level of cover before you take the car, you cant moan if it breaks down and youre left in the lurch. Legally, when buying from a dealer there is an implication - provided you pay the retail price and provided phrases such as “sold without warranty”, or “sold as seen” are not used - that the dealer will ensure the car survives satisfactorily for three months. If a dealer includes a warranty in the price - “free” warranties do not exist - then it is a mechanical breakdown insurance (MBI) package. The insurance is based on variable factors such as the age and mileage of the car cross-referenced with maximum claim limits and all sorts of complicated exclusions. Technically, then, an MBI is not a warranty and dealers should not describe it as such, but they do.
I am so glad that we residents of Sandy were so fortunate to have had Highland Drive widened. It seemed like months and months of annoying construction. However, it was definitely worth it. Our roads are now wider and can accommodate many used cars for sale. We dont need to travel all the way to State Street to find a used car. I especially like the selection between Creek Road and Viscounti Drive. The city didnt need to spend money on beautiful landscaping. They could have just put up “Used Car Lot” signs.

Promotional Caps

Baseball CapBaseball team uniforms, whether amateur or professional, always include baseball caps. They help identify players on the field and are essential in order to keep the sun from players eyes. There are currently two different styles of caps available today. One which has a rather tall, boxy crown and is often horizontally striped (the old style cap still popular with those who love the traditions of the game) or the conventional soft crown of six or eight triangular-shaped sections of fabric. Interestingly, most baseball cap manufacturers still make baseball caps in wool, as they have for over a century, as well as more easily washed fabrics such as cotton or cotton-synthetic combinations.
The GNA History Committee is still looking for nurses caps for a permanent display at Headquarters. Before the tradition is forgotten, we want to preserve this bit of our history. We plan to exhibit the caps with the identity of the donor and the name of the School of Nursing. If you happen to be a nurse who wore a cap, then you know that each school had an identifiable and unique design. Please help us with this project! The caps that have been donated thus far include the following:

At any given lime during the day, an estimated 500,000 passenger vehicle drivers are talking on hand-held cell phones, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. As cell phone usage continues to climb, more and more studies have looked into the impact that talking on the phone while driving has on safety. In response to such findings, New York, New Jersey and the District of Columbia have banned the use of cell phones while driving and other slates are currently considering lull or partial bans ol their own. However, the debate continues because many ol these states still allow the use of hands-free phones while driving and opponents of hands-free use counter that the main cause of accidents is the distraction caused by a phone conversation, not the operation of a hand-held phone. Regardless of cell-phone ban details, many corporations are recognizing that a real risk exists concerning cell phone use and, in an effort to avoid costly litigation stemming from an accident caused by one of their own distracted drivers, are re-evaluating their own phone-use policies. As part of its own recommendation for companies to consider a ban on cell phone use while driving, the California Association of Employers has even put a sample cell phone policy on their website.
The news is sobering. Driving while talking on a cell phone is the same as driving drunk. Motorists who use a cell phone are just as distracted, slow to react and as easily confused as motorists tipsy from drinking. And a drunk driver using a cell phone is more dangerous than a runaway train. The implication is clear. No more “one last call for the road” for Americas habitual phoners. The concern is that, like alcoholics, chronic cell phone users are in denial. They dont believe their “habit” has a negative effect, mostly because it doesnt feel that way. Once a person is off the phone, the cell phone driver immediately “sobers up” and returns to normal alertness and reaction times. Its those few minutes when that phone is off the hook, or even being voice activated, that is the killer — quite literally.

FOOD | Jumbo OUTDOOR GRILLS have set the barbecue industry on fire. And the secret ingredient for people selling grills is not the sauce, but testosterone-fueled grill envy. When a retailer sells one grill in a neighborhood for $4,000 to $5,000, “you can also count on selling three or four more in the same neighborhood within four to six weeks,” says Myers. For Mark Lobel of Purchase, N.Y., grill envy meant forking out about $2,500 for a 27-inch Frontgate model he spotted at a friends cookout. Lobel, a fifth-generation butcher, had an excellent reason for coveting his neighbors grill: “It was really pretty,” he says.

Superbuild.coms board of directors — which includes Ted Tanase, the former CEO of Lanoga Corp. and currently CEO of Pacific Housing Materials Deisgn in Kent, Wash. — more than makes up for that, said Kueber. Each product listed on Superbuild.com has an image of the item, the name of the manufacturer, the suggested retail price and Superbuild.coms price. One of the advantages of being an online venture, Kueber said, is that Superbuild.com need not protect any existing retail pricing model, because it has no capital investment in real estate.
The ABC network sitcom Home Improvement first aired on September 17 1991 and ran for eight seasons through May 1999. During only its second season the show was renewed for three additional seasons an unusual decision in the television industry. Based on the stand-up comedy routine of its star Tim Allen (born Timothy Allen Dick in 1953) Home Improvement initially reflected Allens love of power tools cars and Sears department stores as well as mirroring his own family situation. Allen portrayed Tim Taylor the host of cable TVs “Tool Time.” His wife Jill was portrayed by Patricia Richardson. More than just comedy though Home Improvement epitomized the concerns of the largest generation in history the baby boomers. The Taylors were a representation of the average American family of the 1990s and their struggles although treated with light-hearted humor reflected the struggles of the shows demographic. In the main three fundamental concerns of the boomer generation were examined on a weekly basis–relationships family and the search for spirituality.

Kubetin, Sally Koch Evidence continues to mount that botulinum toxin A is an effective treatment for migraine headaches, Dr. Arnold Klein said at a surgery seminar sponsored by the Colorado Dermatology Center. During the 3-month follow-up period, patients who received either dose of Botox reported fewer migraine attacks, milder severity of attacks that did occur, and less use of migraine medications than in the baseline period. The lower dose of Botox was judged preferable because it was associated with fewer adverse effects, said Dr. Klein, who practices in Beverly Hills, Calif. The authors concluded that pericranial injection of Botox is a safe and effective way to reduce migraine frequency and serverity (Headache 40[6]:445-50, 2000).

In recent years, investing in most real estate projects has generated very handsome returns. Other than the office markets in some high-tech areas, the returns on real estate have far exceeded the returns on all other investment categories. There are a variety of reasons why real estate, in general, has performed above other investment types, one of which is the unusually low interest rates. These investments included a variety of real estate types, such as single-family housing, multi-family office buildings, hotels, raw land, assisted living facilities and industrial properties. Investments were made by direct equity mezzanine funding, mezz equity and mortgages. All the investments were made with outside managers.

While it may seem inconceivable to the 50 percent of Americans whose anxiety and fear of pain keeps them from regular checkups, an enjoyable, spa-like dental experience is possible, and it is available in the Lansing area. In October 2003, the Valleys, associate Dr. Sarah Faber, and the entire staff attended the American Dental Associations (ADA) annual session in San Francisco where they had an opportunity to study the latest in patient pampering methods and how to incorporate them into their practice. Management Consultant Shirley Brown, a practicing dentist and clinical psychologist, and speaker at the ADA session, said the consumer media have coined the term “dental spa,” but many practices offer services and amenities specifically designed to relax patients without considering themselves a “spa.” Since dentists run dental practices as independent businesses, each dentist decides what patient services to offer. The International Medical Spa Association (IMSA) defines a dental spa as “a facility whose dental prograin is run under the strict supervision of a licensed dentist that provides services, integrating both traditional and non-traditional dental and spa treatments (such as massage therapy, skincare and body treatments).”

Prices will be justified by the advanced technology used and the lifestyle conveniences that the dental practice will offer. The crisis in NHS dentistry is set to continue as the Government yesterday announced reform plans that will further curtail dentists clinical freedom and threaten their income. Gerald Malone, Minister for Health, said that the “prior approval” scheme, under which dentists must seek permission for certain expensive or complex treatments, is to be extended and made “more rigorous”. Dentists leaders, said they were “disappointed” with the proposals. They claimed that Mr Malone had missed an opportunity to resolve the three- year dispute with the profession which has seen thousands of dentists leave the NHS or turn away new patients. Nearly a million adults and children have been deregistered by their dentists in the past four years.

In therapeutic interviews described as either hypnosis or biofeedback, the patient must change mental imagery to achieve the desired state or physiologic change. If the therapists monitors physiologic measures while coaching a patient through a self-hypnotic exercise, invariably there will be changes in measures (e.g., increased peripheral temperature, decreased pulse rate). Regardless of the confusion, the benefit of adding physiologic monitoring (biofeedback) to hypnosis is the enhancement of a sense of personal control and competency. Children recognize that by changing their thinking, they can impact body processes. This makes the experience more concrete and provides trance ratification and gives a child increased confidence about achieving the desired therapeutic outcome. The increase in construction activity was higher in civil engineering. According to seasonally adjusted data, the value of construction put in place in civil engineering rose substantially for the fourth consecutive quarter (by 9.8% in Q1 alone) and was 67.4% higher than in the same quarter of 2006. This vigorous growth is estimated to reflect the accelerated construction of motorways. Activity in the construction of buildings declined according to seasonally adjusted data. The value of construction put in place in the construction of buildings rose steadily from quarter to quarter last year to reach a record-high level in Q4. The value of construction put in place decreased by 2.0% in the three months to March this year but was still 21.0% higher than in the same period last year. Seasonally adjusted activity declined both in the construction of residential and nonresidential buildings. Otherwise, activity rose considerably in the construction of non-residential buildings while it fell in the construction of residential buildings compared with the same period of 2006. In the latter, it even reached the lowest level in two years, according to seasonally adjusted data. In interpreting the value of residential construction put in place we note that these figures exclude the activity of smaller companies (see the note under the table) in which, in our estimate, the construction of buildings is the main activity. The increase in the number of employees continued in Q1. The number of people employed in the construction sector in 2006 was 7.5% higher than in the year before. In the first quarter of 2007, the number of employees rose by as much as 11.3% over the year before. The number of employees by activity rose particularly in building completion and general construction, similarly as last year. In terms of employee status, sole proprietors and their employees recorded higher growth rates (also see p. 10).
CONSTRUCTIONFor those companies that decide to expand via new construction, the experience can be an unsettling one, full of uncertainties. In fact, relatively few startup businesses choose construction as their mode of entry due to the higher costs associated with it and the greater length of time involved from the breaking ground stage to the day when the establishment opens its doors for business. Small- and mid-sized businesses, however, are far more likely to have the financial wherewithal to launch a new construction project. Such firms have a proven track recordwhich can help them with financingand already-productive operations that bring in revenue that can be used to defray the costs of construction.Owners of these businesses, however, should fully weigh the advantages and disadvantages of construction before moving forward. As the J.K. Lasser Institute indicated in How to Run a Small Business, Building has the advantage of giving you the space and arrangements which meet your needs, providing you know specifically and objectively what the needs are. The obvious disadvantages are the delay in occupancy while land acquisition, design work, and building are going on, and the cost of overruns and mistakes caused by forecasting errors and planning oversights.

Civil engineering construction continued to increase in the third quarter. The value of construction put in place in this segment of construction was 26.2% higher than a year ago. A year-on-year decrease was recorded only in the construction of residential buildings (see table). In interpreting the value of construction put in place, we note that these figures exclude the activity of smaller firms (see note below table), whose main activity is estimated to be residential construction. According to seasonally adjusted data, activity increased relative to the previous quarter only in civil engineering, whereas activity in residential construction was at its lowest point in the last two and a half years. The growth of employment in the construction sector continued. In the nine months to September, the number of employees surged by 11.0%. As in 2006, the highest increases in employment were recorded in general construction and building completion. The share of firms that were unable to find workers declined in November after Octobers record-high value. According to business trends in construction, 47% of enterprises (employing 52% of workers) reported “shortages of skilled workers” as a limiting factor in November. This figure is smaller than in the previous two months, but still well above the average value of this indicator in the last five years (since data have been available).
After the robust growth in 2006, construction activity posted even higher growth rates in 2007. The value of construction put in place surged by 18.5% over 2006. Activity in civil engineering increased by 24.7% as a result of the construction of transport infrastructure. The construction of buildings grew by 15.5%; within that, non-residential construction was up 20.2%, whereas activity in residential construction decreased by 0.9%. Based on detailed data on issued building permits, the vigorous construction of hotels appears to have continued last year, probably along with the construction of wholesale and retail trade buildings. In interpreting the figure on the value of residential construction put in place we should bear in mind that these figures exclude the activity of smaller firms (see the note under the table), where the construction of buildings is the main activity. Stronger growth was partly linked to favourable weather conditions, especially in the first half of the year. This is corroborated by the business trends regarding the limiting factors in construction. The share of firms that reported bad weather conditions as a limiting factor was much lower in the first half of 2007 than in the previous year. The weather was also more propitious than the year before in the third quarter, but it was less favourable in the fourth quarter, which affected growth in the latter part of the year. The growth in the number of employees increased further last year. In 2007 the number of people employed in the construction sector was 11.3% higher, on average, than in 2006. The number of workers by activity rose particularly in building completion; in the latter part of the year it also increased in general construction. In terms of employee status, higher growth rates were recorded in the number of sole proprietors and their employees.
The growth of construction activity was the in 15 years. This robust growth was again driven by the construction of motorways, in addition to the pick-up in the construction of non-residential buildings, which reached its highest level since 1999 The value of construction put in place surged by 15.3% over 2005. Growth in civil engineering totalled 16.8%. The construction of buildings rose by 14.0%, within that, non-residential construction was up 17.7% while residential construction increased by 2.6%. Based on detailed data about the issued building permits we estimate that the construction of wholesale and retail trade buildings and hotels picked up last year. In interpreting the data on the value of residential construction put in place we note that these figures exclude the activity of smaller companies (see the note under the table), in which, in our estimate, the construction of buildings is the main activity. The number of workers in the construction sector rose sharply in 2006, especially in the final quarter. The number of people employed in construction was on average 7.5% higher in 2006 than in 2005. In the fourth quarter alone, it increased by as much as 9.7% over the year before The number of employees by activity rose particularly in building completion, in the latter pari of the year it also increased in general construction In lerms of employee status, the number of individual private entrepreneurs and their employees rose the most last year. The number of planned dwellings and the total planned floor area of buildings continued to increase in the final quarter of 2006. The planned floor area of new buildings and extensions was 27.5% higher than in the same quarter of 2005 (43 8% for non-residential buildings and 16.9% for residential buildings) In 2006 as a whole, the total floor area of the planned buildings increased by 35.8%. within that by 19.7% for residential buildings and by 56 0% for non-residential buildings The building permits issued last year were granted for the construction of 8.260 new dwellings, which is 19.6% more than in 2005 and 47.0% more than the average of the previous seven years (since these data have been available)

FOR THE uninitiated, medical and health insurance is a relatively new class of insurance in Malaysia compared to motor, fire or personal accident insurance. A lot has been written about it, but there continues to be confusion over what health insurance really is.
Over the years the concept of medical necessity has evolved to encompass a multitude of medical management strategies. Essentially, in terms of the contract language, medical necessity has become a workhorse concept to determine coverage eligibility. In the process, the interpretation of the term has taken on various guises and a variety of processes have been used to define medical necessity. The following discussion highlights the variable uses of the concept of medical necessity. 1. Determining the most appropriate intensity of service and place of service

Daimler-Benz yesterday decided not to let its German rivals leave it in the dust in super-luxury cars, approving plans to go ahead with production of a limousine to compete with Rolls-Royce. As Volkswagen and BMW reached a settlement on taking over Rolls brands, Daimlers management board gave the go-ahead for production of the Maybach, which it has previewed at auto shows for the past year. “With the positive decision for the production of the Mercedes- Benz Maybach, we are underscoring once more our claim to represent the absolute top in every market segment,” said Daimler chief executive Mr Jurgen Schrempp.
A new business recently opened offering limousine service in Toledo as well as service to Detroit and Cleveland and other destinations in the area. American Limousine has been founded by John and Jerry Wilder, along with their daughter, Karen Mnney. All three are life-long residents of Toledo. John Wilder has been a professional driver for fifty years. He retired from a local armored car company prior to the start up of this new business. At the present time, American Limousine has two airport sedans and one executive sedan. “These are not the conventional airport sedans, theyre a lit e bit sportier and jazzier, but still are roomy and comfortable. Ou cars are always clean and well maintained. We take pride in that,” explained Minney.

Is their care being taken out of your hands? As the public learns about the wonders of refractive surgery, advertisements boasting rockbottom prices for LASIK surgery are transforming some potential patients into sale-searching bargain hunters. Scores of patients have crossed the border to Canada, prompted by the favorable currency exchange rate. To add injury to insult, some patients are led to believe that the surgery fee covers your care!
Clear Vision Club (CVC) claims to be a consumer advocate to the LASIK consumer. According to the organization, it aims to educate, motivate and promote LASIK surgery through a free membership (based on candidacy criteria), an informative Web site and backend educational e-mails, which the consumer has requested. CVCs eBay page explains its screening criteria and claims to have leads for all areas of the country. The cost? Fifty dollars, although bidding for the item was closed at the time of publication. The page is available on eBay for a limited time only, so if you or a colleague are interested in looking into this, you might have to search the eBay Web site a bit to find this and/or similar offers.

Electro-Metrics Inc. of Johnstown, New York, has received U.S. Patent No. 5,808,852 for its “chain mail” turntable grounding system. This grounding system is currently used exclusively by Electro-Metrics, and is incorporated in all its metal-top EMI test turntables. The “chain mail” is a grounding medium attached to the outer diameter of a turntable and provides contact with a grounding ring below the metal tabletop. The grounding ring then provides contact with the ground plane of the test area. This method has several advantages over more commonly used grounding techniques, such as beryllium metal brushes. It can be smaller, provides a nearly continuous ground, and can tolerate greater variations in assembly and setup since it is, essentially, self adjusting. Electro-Metrics will consider licensing this chain mail grounding system for use by other companies or individuals. Anyone interested should contact Valerie Zabo, Electro– Metrics, Inc., 231 Enterprise Rd., Johnstown, NY 12095, phone: (518) 762-2600, Fax: (518) 762-2812, email: info@emihq.com
NEW YORK — Run-DMC were among the first rappers to proclaim that a DJ could be the band. The man behind their beats, Jam Master Jay, was among the first to say that a disc jockey should be a teacher, too. In June 2002, Jay and two partners founded the Scratch DJ Academy to formally teach others the tricks of the turntable — an education that previously relied almost entirely on word of mouth and sheer repetition. “And its true,” Principe said. “If you approach it without a real understanding of the basics, its just going to take that much longer to learn.”
Fisher accomplished the effect by compositing Elliot, who was shot on a large, green-colored turntable, with an image of a real turntable system. Fisher also composited in the face of the record and cemented the effect by adding reflections of Elliot and of the turntables stylus onto the face of the record. Avid DS Nitris was used for compositing and effects, and Softimage was used for 3D work.

The loan featured a rate of 5.03% and a 7 year term. Jeffrey 3. Weinberg David Ostrov negotiated the transaction.
Where Creativity and Capital Meet Using Untapped Collateral and Nontraditional Payment Terms Three significant requirements are needed for a client to utilize monetization financing: 1) an assignment of/or an absolute and unconditional promise to pay from an investment-grade obligor or an acceptable substitute financial instrument backing the transaction, 2) a predictable cash flow, and 3) a date-certain payment. An investment-grade obligor for this program is typically rated by SP and Moodys with an acceptable rating. There are exceptions and substitutes, however, for these rating criteria. If a company is not rated, there are alternate procedures to qualify said obligor. An obligor is typically a customer or other third party who has contractually agreed to make payments to the client or guarantee payments for the client within a term of 1-30 years. In one sense, monetization financing can be viewed as a longer-term variation of factoring without the high cost and other major differences associated with factoring.

“Weve seen phenomenal growth both in the adoption of technology by traditional real estate firms and in the formation of real estate focused dot coms,” says Dale Anne Reiss, global leader of the real estate arm of Ernst Young. “Literally hundreds of firms (are) now operating and more (are) arriving every day.” These thoughts were echoed by Joe Rubin, National Director of Real Estate eBusiness Solutions. “Traditional real estate companies are finally embracing technology because they see that the Internet has now delivered the tools for online service providers to deliver business processes faster, cheaper and more efficiently.” According to Reiss, start-up activity has been particularly intense in the capital and transactions sectors.” While the transaction sector is in its relative infancy, more than two dozen sites have quickly emerged through which commercial real estate properties can be acquired and sold online,” says Reiss. “And there are more that 30 sites where commercial properties can be leased or marketed online. The digital economy is changing so quickly that companies. need to be able to think on their feet, and reap opportunity whenever and wherever it comes.”

“[L]awyers in criminal courts are necessities, not luxuries.”1 Of course, the record of Burdines trial cannot possibly indicate precisely when Mr. Cannon was asleep or awake or what trial happenings Cannon observed or missed because he was asleep. However, it was established that he missed “substantial portions” of the case against Calvin Burdine.14 Therefore, it is not surprising that the jury convicted Burdine of capital murder and sentenced him to death. What is surprising is that when Burdine complained of his trial counsels inexcusable behavior to Texass highest court of criminal appeals, the court summarily held that, although Burdine did prove that Cannon slept through substantial portions of Burdines capital murder trial, Burdine had not proven that he received ineffective assistance of counsel in violation of the Sixth Amendment.15 It was not until over sixteen years later that a divided court agreed with Burdine that the lawyering he received at his capital murder trial was constitutionally inadequate.16 Although ruling in Burdines favor, the court did so over strong and vociferous dissent.17
CHICAGO — The international law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP announced today that Daniel Rubinstein has joined its Chicago office as a Shareholder in the Litigation and White Collar Criminal Defense Practices. Mr. Rubinstein joins the firm after spending more than seven years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in both Los Angeles and Chicago, and three years as a state prosecutor in California. In 2007, he was lead prosecutor in a complex racketeering and international money laundering investigation and successful six-week jury trial of two car dealers who laundered more than $25 million in drug proceeds and sent a portion of it to Iran. Mr. Rubinstein was awarded the Department of Justices Directors Award for Superior Performance as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in connection with the investigation and trial. He was also lead prosecutor in an extensive Title III wiretap investigation and successful two-week jury trial of an international drug cartel, which was responsible for importing approximately 2,000 kilograms of cocaine into Chicago in 2004, and the subsequent investigation and successful trial of two members of the international drug cartel who attempted to kidnap witnesses who testified against the defendant.

Vending Machine Cuisine William R. (Bill) Farhat was a restaurateur in Grand Rapids when some representatives of vending companies asked him if he could make sandwiches for their machines. “With a restaurant kitchen, it really wasnt possible, Farhat recalls. But he asked the vendors if preparing food was a problem for them.
“Dozens of the machines have popped up in suburbs and rural areas around New York City in the last two years,” the Times reveals, “and Daniel M. Bartholomew - a Hudson Valley, New York farmer turned worm tycoon has quickly become the countrys second largest operator of the devices.” Starting with one machine last year on his front lawn (which was generating $900 a month) Bartholomew now has 28 with plans to have 100 by the year 2000. Worms can stay alive for as long as 10 days on the mix of peat moss and powered newsprint in the cups. Machines have a thermostat that keeps the bait at 40 to 45 degrees in summer and warmer in winter to serve the needs of ice fishing. Bartholomew has set up machines at marinas and small convenience stores near boat docks, where people can “pick up beer, ice and bait in one place.” About his future with worms and vending machines, he enthuses: “The skys the limit.” Over the years, in these pages, we have written about commercial developments of vending machines that accept recycled containers and give the correct coins back to the recycler. The machines were specifically manufactured for use at deposit centers (supermarkets, for example) in states that had passed mandatory deposits on soda bottles, cans, etc. Unlike the worm vending machines, the ones for bottles have taken a slower route to commercial success. But latest reports indicate continued progress.
Tokyo Electric Power Company is trying to do something about it, at least during its peak seasons. Along with Coca-Cola Japan and Fuji Electric, TEPCO developed vending machines that achieve energy savings of around 10-15 percent through increased insulation and timers: During the summer, they cool the drinks in the morning hours and then automatically switch themselves off between 1:00 and 4:00 PM. According to TEPCO, if all the 2 million drink-vending machines in the country adopted the technology, Japan would produce a peak cut of around 900,000 million kwh. To achieve these savings, the electric companies in Japan (except Hokkaido, whose peak generation is in the winter rather than summer) pay a subsidy to vending machine manufacturers of 10,000 yen (around $80) for each Eco Vender installed. This will continue until 1999-at that point, according to Japans Federation of Electric Power Companies, the makers should have accrued enough money to compensate for fitting the timing devices to their machines. With promises from large vending operators like Sapporo, Kirin Beer, and Coca-Cola Japan, the FEPC estimated that by the end of 1997, there were 100,000 Eco Venders in Japan.

For years, Remodeling magazines annual “Cost vs. Value Report” has offered comfort to homeowners investing hefty dollars into home improvement projects. The high payback on the most popular rehabs - kitchens and bathrooms - has even been the catalyst to spur some homeowners to remodel. They felt confident that if they did good work, theyd get back most of their funds. Does this mean that homeowners should stop renovating? Hardly, especially when they have a distinct vision of how they want their home to look and function - and if they have the funds. But decreasing numbers suggest greater caution: - Never overimprove. Take the value of your existing home, add in the cost of your potential improvements and be sure the new sum doesnt exceed the value of comparable neighborhood homes.
Nursing home care in Utah is improving, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reported Wednesday. Many of those improvements were linked directly by care center administrators to a quality improvement project through HealthInsight, Medicares Quality Improvement Organization in Utah. The organization is part of the national Nursing Home Initiative, which focuses on raising standards of care in nursing homes across the country and giving consumers more comparison information.

The technique can be used to coat unusual geometries such as fine wires. In addition, the HFCVD process can penetrate the exterior surface of a material to coat interior cavities such as those in a porous substance like foam. MITs next goal is combining the waterproofing technique with a microbe-killing fabric treatment also developed at the school, according to university researchers.

THE biggest threat to the banks traditional stanglehold over their customers comes from the internet. Some analysts believe that the new web-based entrants into the financial services market could within a decade have eclipsed the high street banks altogether. So-called Monoliners, on the other hand, are able to focus on providing just one type of financial product - say personal loans, high interest deposit accounts or mortgages - direct to their consumers, and usually via the internet. The best known examples are Prudentials Egg, Standard Life Bank and Charles Schwab, the web- based stockbroker. The banks are to some extent handicapped in this market, whose potential they were slow to acknowledge. Their old-fashioned infrastructures, based on a mixture of branch banking and electronic media, mean they are obliged to make a virtue out of having what they term a multi-channel distribution strategy. Given the choice, and were it not for political considerations, many banks would probably close many of their branches tomorrow.
* Congress recently moved a step closer to banning new taxes on commerce conducted over the Internet when the House passed legislation imposing a moratorium on such levies.Senate legislation, expected to be considered this summer, calls for a six-year moratorium and prohibits states and localities that currently tax Internet transactions from collecting the taxes during that period.

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing the creation of new regulations that expand the hunting of Canada geese in hopes of reducing the current resident population of 3.5 million by 1.2 million. As a result, the agency wants to allow states to undertake approved population control strategies, such as nest and egg destruction, trapping and culling programs and expanded hunting opportunities. “The service believes that the problems caused by resident Canada geese can be best addressed at the state level,” said agency director Steve Williams. “To that end, we are committed to providing state wildlife management agencies with as much flexibility as possible to address the issue.”

Despite tough times in the magazine industry and Petersens failed attempt to turn Sports Afield around, Wurfbain believes he can wait out the downturn.
